Having consistent driving lessons is crucial, so I work on a ‘weekly slot’ basis. This means my pupils get the same day and time each week. It makes life much easier and gives you peace of mind in knowing that you’re going to have consistency.

A 2020 manual VW Golf Life. I’ve had a Golf since I qualified as an instructor and find its a forgiving and easy car to learn in. Fitted with many safety features and technology, it will give you peace of mind that you are learning in a market leading vehicle.
You need to be 17 and have your provisional driving license.
You also need to make sure you can read a car license plate from 20m away. If you can’t, you need to get your eyes tested and buy glasses before starting your lessons.
No, you don’t need to have passed your Theory Test before starting lessons. However, you can’t book a practical driving test until you’ve passed your Theory Test. So I always recommend getting your Theory done as soon as possible. Plus, it does help with your practical driving because you’ll have better knowledge of signs, road markings etc.
Please note: Theory Tests are valid for 2 years, after which you’d need to re-take the test if you don’t pass your practical driving test before that time.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. People have different levels of anxiety when it comes to getting in the vehicle for the first time. Rest assured, I will work at your pace and accomodate you when you need any breaks. I’ll always try to adapt lessons to suit your learning style and value your feedback in how I can make things better for you.
No, I don’t work at weekends. But I do offer evening lessons during the week (usually 4-6pm and 6.30-8.30pm).
Yes of course, as long as it’s in the area I cover and I know in advance.
It’s impossible to know for sure. Everyone learns at different rates. But the average person takes approx. 45 hours of driving lessons and around 20 hours of private practise to pass the current UK manual driving test.
No I don’t offer intensive courses.
Yes, I do. If I don’t have availability I will give you the option of being added to my waiting list.
I always offer free slots to my waiting list first, so I strongly advise being put on the waiting list as early as possible to avoid longer waits for lessons. This is especially important for lessons after 4pm - there can sometimes be a 5-6 month wait for these slots.
"I passed my driving test many, many years ago but have never considered myself to be a good driver, opting to be a passenger whenever possible.
Having recently recovered from an accident, not car related, and not having driven for some considerable time before the accident, I recently booked some lessons with James to have one final attempt at driving again.
I am just so glad I did. Thank you James for your patience, very instructive tuition, together with your very supportive and encouraging nature.
The lessons concentrated not only on town driving in particular, ie clutch control, observations, parallel parking, etc but also on being a better all round driver. Thank you James for giving me back my confidence and independence. I actually enjoy driving more than I ever did."

"Both my sons passed first time with just 1 minor each! This is a testimony to the high standard of instruction by James. Both of my boys enjoyed the learning experience with you. James is very patient, understanding and professional and able to adapt his teaching style to suit the individual. Would highly recommend. I have no complaints."

"I couldn’t have asked for a better driving instructor. James Hides was professional, informative, knowledgeable but most of all was endlessly patient in supporting me through my driving journey. I was very anxious about driving again after failing years ago with a different instructor but James took things at my pace while still encouraging me to be brave and go out of my comfort zone to reach my full potential. He adapted his teaching style to meet my needs and regularly gave me constructive feedback to improve which, when coupled with a many laughs and anecdotes, gave me more confidence and self belief. I would recommend James as an instructor to everyone I know."
